Gift Aid: 25% more for your church, at no cost to you
If you pay UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax, your church can claim back the basic-rate tax you’ve already paid on your gift. Every £10 you give becomes £12.50.
Can I Gift Aid my donation?
Yes, if you have paid at least as much UK Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax in the tax year as the Gift Aid your churches and charities will claim on all your gifts that year. Gift Aid is 25p for every £1 you give.
It must be your own money — not a company’s, not a collection on behalf of others, and not a gift where you receive something in return.
What does the declaration cover?
When you tick Gift Aid, you make one declaration to that church. It covers that gift, any gifts you make in future, and any gifts you made in the past four years — so you never have to tick it again for the same church.
What does the church need from me?
HMRC needs your full name, house name or number, and postcode. That’s all. Your church keeps these details with your declaration, as the law requires.
When should I tell the church?
Please let them know — or update it yourself in your giving dashboard — if you want to cancel your declaration, change your name or home address, or no longer pay enough tax.
I pay higher-rate tax
You can claim the difference between basic and higher rate back through your Self Assessment tax return. Your giving dashboard shows the total of your Gift Aided gifts for each tax year (6 April to 5 April).
This is a summary. For the full rules see HMRC’s guidance on Gift Aid on GOV.UK.
